Racial Equity Statement

We believe access to healthy, affordable food is a basic human right and understand that the food system has been created and maintained by historical and ongoing racial inequities. This knowledge guides the development of our organization’s strategy, decision-making processes, policy development and coalition-building efforts.

As a result, we seek to advance policy solutions that are anti-racist to address the systemic causes of hunger and disrupt inequitable power dynamics to ensure that those most impacted by food inequity are driving policy solutions. We are committed to engaging in root-cause analysis both internally and externally with our partners and will hold annual convenings to help our partners and staff develop an organizational culture and advocacy strategies that address the underlying causes of food inequity and systemic racism.

Racial Equity Guiding Principles

We are committed to the process of building a racial equity lens into our programs, advocacy and operations and dismantling white supremacist culture.
To cultivate an equity mindset and build a shared language around structural racism, we require each new staff, Board or Advisory member to participate in racial equity training. However, we know the work does not stop there. Internally, we are committed to the ongoing analysis of our practices and values and the process of dismantling white supremacist culture. Externally, we actively seek partnerships across difference, with organizations focused on addressing food inequity to combat oppression and systemic racism through advocacy change.

We believe in the power of community voice.
Core to our mission and program structure is elevating the voices of community food leaders who have traditionally been disenfranchised and lacked the resources and access to drive policy change. In the belief that those most affected by a problem are best suited to drive solutions, we are actively recruiting, supporting, connecting and organizing those most impacted by food inequity to ensure that they have a seat at the policymaking table. We are leveraging our privilege, access and resources to make the policy process more transparent and inclusive.

We believe in equity, justice and inclusivity.
We are more innovative and responsive when our staff, board, and advisers represent a diversity of perspectives and life experiences and feel empowered to raise their voices. We are actively recruiting individuals of diverse races, ethnicities, viewpoints, experiences, economic backgrounds, genders and sexual identities and orientations to shape our organization.

Our guiding principles and statement were drafted and adopted by Equity Advocates’ Board of Directors and Advisors. We consider this a living document and recognize that it will require ongoing reflection and action. We welcome any feedback you may have to strengthen the statement or how we put these values into practice.
